Dear Sir,

I did know of 'Miguel Manara' by Oskar Milosz. You have given me great pleasure by sending me the poems included in the volume 'Storge'. I have read them as well. There is a special air to this work. I may have been able to become intimate with this air during my visit to Lithuania.

In the same breath I wish to compliment your inexhaustible creativity, which we bear witness to through your constantly new publications.

Alongside my words of respect, I wish you God's blessing..

Czeslaw Milosz's letters with the Pope John Paul II

Cracow, April 2, 2004

Dear Holy Father,

Age changes our point of view. When I was young, it was considered inappropriate for a poet to ask for papal blessing.

Yet that is what I'm truly concerned about as over the past few years I have been writing my poems with the intention not to deviate from Catholic orthodoxy. Whether my efforts were fruitful, that I do not know.

Therefore, I am asking for words that affirm my striving toward a goal common to us.

May the Christ's promise be fulfilled on Judgment Day.

Dear Sir,

Your letter, dated April 2 of this year, I read with great emotion - rather, I read it a few times. It is because those few words are rich and manifold in meaning.

You write that the object of Your concern was 'not to deviate from Catholic orthodoxy' in Your works. I am convinced that such an attitude of a Poet is decisive. In this sense I am happy to affirm Your words about 'pursuing a common goal'.

I also wish wholeheartedly that in all of us, in Your life as well as in mine, will become realized Christ's greatest promise given to mankind through His Resurrection.

I also wish wholeheartedly that in all of us, in Your life as well as in mine, the greatest promise given to mankind by Christ through His Resurrection will become realized.
